What an extreme-weather attribution study establishes

Attribution studies compare the likelihood or intensity of an event in today’s climate with a world without human-caused warming. They do not treat climate change as the only cause of a flood or heatwave: natural variability also matters. A useful report identifies the event, location and measured change in probability or intensity. Its result should not be transferred to another disaster without evidence.

One hot year is different from sustained warming

A single year above 1.5°C relative to pre-industrial temperatures is not the same measurement as the Paris Agreement’s long-term warming goal. WMO explains that long-term warming is typically assessed over twenty years. Annual temperatures include shorter-term natural variation. Check the baseline and averaging period before comparing a monthly record, an annual forecast and a long-term warming estimate.

Power capacity is not electricity delivered

A project’s megawatt rating describes how much power it can produce under specified conditions, not how much electricity it delivers over a year. Generation is measured over time in megawatt-hours. A one-megawatt generator running at full output for one hour produces one megawatt-hour. Operating conditions and downtime affect the total, so equal-capacity projects need not supply equal amounts of electricity.
